Author Spotlight: Candace Knoebel
Someone recommend Everlasting to me over the summer and I quickly fell in love with Candace's work. She has recently released Evernight in the series and I am dying to get my to get my had on book three!!! (Gives Candace my puppy dog face)
1. Can
your fans find you at an upcoming event? If so, please provide the details of
the event or events.
- Yep!
I’ll be attending Utopya next year (2015) in Nashville.
2. Do
you listen to music while you write? If so, is it different with each book or series?
- Absolutely. In fact, music inspires a lot of
the scenes that I end up writing. I have playlists on Spotify that I keep for
each book, and then for scenes in the book. I usually keep one for the male and
female protagonist, and then one for different scenes.
3. What
book influenced you the most growing up?
- Harry Potter. It’s why I love everything
fantasy and magic. I started reading the first book shortly after it was
released at the age of 11, and followed the series throughout the years until
the last was released. It started my love of reading.
4. Name
someone other than a family member who has been a huge supporter during your
writing career.
- My best friend and fellow author Sonya Loveday.
She has been my go-to from day one. When either of us are stuck, we call each
other up and shoot ideas back and forth until the other feels unstuck. I’m
incredibly lucky to have a friend like her.
5. What
is your writing style? Do you outline or just write it as it comes to you and
let the story unfold as you write?
- I’m 50/50 panster and plotter. I start with an
idea, and then very roughly flesh out
where I want the story to head. When I start writing, I try to keep the plot
moving in that direction, but I give the characters most of the control with
showing me where they want the story to end up. A lot of times, the final
product is something I never started out thinking it would be, and that’s
probably my favorite part of writing.
6. Is
it hard for you to decide what the titles of your books will be?
- Sometimes. Especially when writing a
series/trilogy. You want the titles to have a familiarity amongst them to link
them together, so trying to find the perfect words that not only relate to the
story, but also the entire series, can sometimes be challenging.
7. Did
the idea behind this book hit you in the middle of the night or while driving
your car?
- For the Born
in Flames Trilogy, the idea came
to me in my living room while I was walking around aimlessly (bored). For the Night Watchmen Series, the idea came to
me while I was working on the trilogy, but it started out completely different
from what it ended up being.
8. How
much research did the book take?
- A little here and there. Mostly mapping out the
areas, and also diving into the pagan world to learn how wiccans practice
magic.
9. Is
there a message you hope your reader grasps?
- In my current series, the protagonist struggles
with self-acceptance ... like most of us. Through her, I want my reader to find
the confidence to embrace who they are, flaws and all, because it is our flaws
that set us apart from everyone else. And there’s beauty in that.
10. What
is your next writing adventure?
- I’m still working on the Night Watchmen series, but I do have a NA contemporary romance in
mind. The characters won’t leave me alone. So that may be coming to life in the
near future.
11. When
can I start stalking you for details on your next book release?
- Whenever you want lol. I post all of my updates
on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/candaceknoebel. And also on my
website: https://www.candaceknoebel.com.
12. Can
you give me a little something from your next writing project to tease your
fans with?
- Sure. :) This is from Evernight (Night Watchmen, #2) which is
available for pre-order, and will be released on this year’s Culling - October
31st, 2014:
“What do we have
here?” the Witch says. It’s a females voice, smooth with power. Her dark eyes
fall on mine. She lifts her nose, and then a small, wicked grin spreads across
her face. “The Everlasting.” She looks over at Weldon. “Seize him. Stand the
other next to him. Kill them.”
Terror slips inside
of me, coiling around my heart. Jaxen reaches for his other flux, but the Demon
aims the gun in my direction, stopping Jaxen in his tracks.
Weldon’s eyes delve
into mine, unearthing a strength I’ve yet to find myself. I can tell by the
look in his eyes that he’s already checked out of reality. He has nothing to
lose. Death doesn’t scare him and he’s left me on my own to figure this out.
He’s left me to either suck it up, or let it all go.
I am the only thing
standing in this entire universe that can get us out of this.
“Make it quick,” the
Witch calls as she takes a step in my direction. “I’ll alert Bael and the
Priestess of their presence.”
The Demons cock their
guns. Press the cold metal against Jaxen and Weldon’s forehead. Time slows as
their fingers pull back on the trigger and desperation switches on inside of
me. “NOO!!” I scream as my magic flares to life. I tug hard on the air, on
everything around me, so hard that it pulls everyone to their knees.
13. Who
designed your cover?
Ravven. She’s amazing! She’s
designed all of my covers. :)
Candace Knoebel is the award-winning author of Born in Flames-book
one in a young adult fantasy trilogy. She discovered in 2009 through
lunch breaks and late nights after putting her kids to bed, a world
where she could escape the ever-pressing days of an eight to five
Purgatory. And an outlet for all the voices residing in her head.
Published
by 48fourteen in 2012, Born in Flames went on to win Turning the Pages
Book of the Year award in February of 2013. In January of 2014, the last
book in the trilogy, From the Embers, was released, thusly completing
the trilogy. She now works on the Night Watchmen Series, while guzzling
Red Bulls and pretending to be a ninja on Heelys.
