"But this preacher didn't marry us in the eyes of God." The signatures were all present except for hers. "How is this legal?"
"Shall I let you out then?"
"No." She shook her head. "I'll sign. Gladly." He handed her a fountain pen and she scrawled her name on the document.
"Good for you, Ellie." He knocked on the ceiling and the coach lurched forward. "There's only one more thing to make this legal."
"What's that?"
He leaned forward, his hand smoothing up her petticoats to expose her thighs. "I think you are very well-versed in what, Ellie."
"But you're a man of God. Surely this place is not proper."
He grinned. "The Bible was just for show in case the cur who owned your contract didn't bend to the call of silver. Make no mistake, Ellie. The road is long and I won't have anyone doubting our union."
She sat breathless as he undid his trousers as the coach bounced on the open plains. Without protest, she leaned back. Her thoughts drifted to the outlaw who had made her spirit soar with the touch of his hand as her husband roughly took her, lacking in regard. She tried to think of his situation as fortuitous. As her belly swelled, she would have a husband to explain and the shame of having a child out of wedlock had vanished.
Ellie was determined to make her marriage work in all the sense of the word. Life was not meant for silly dreams of a girl who had lost hope on a trail somewhere between Beechrose and Briar Creek.
