This book gutted me from the very beginning and I could hardly stand to turn the page to see what troubles would lay ahead for Porter and Charlotte, BUT at the same time I was intrigued in how they would handle those troubles and find their way to each other.
The ending was shocking and unexpected - just as Ms Martinez’s last duet did to me! She has a way of crafting a book that will surprise you and make you feel connected to the characters on a deeper level than just as an outsider reading their story. I read this book at one of the lowest points in my life and yet I feel it had such a positive impact on me at the time. Porter’s hope and help to get Charlotte out of her darkness while battling his own darkness was admirable. He told her from the very beginning there would be only three rules if they were to be together:
“Just a little company in the darkness. No questions. No judgments. No faking it.”
I feel such a deep connection with these characters and I so can’t wait to read their next book!!!
